In The Mood to Mock Idiots? Me Too.

Have you seen “the site emo fans DO NOT want you to see!“? Good lord. I suggest you go to the bathroom, get a fresh drink, and settle in, because we’re going to be here for a while while I tear this site a new one.
First of all, the site is run by someone who is the dictionary definition of a “flapping labia.” I say this because after less than a week, the site has locked its forums because of “obscenity-filled” posts that had to be banned. I’m not sure what the creator of that site expected, considering it’s an ill-informed site full of anti-emo propaganda and the usual “oh my God! It’s all about cutting!” garbage that is shoved down people’s throats on a regular basis.
I really wish people could understand that cutting is not emo. And that there are many people who cut and they will never know these people do, because most people who cut try their best to keep it a secret from everyone around them. Perhaps they should watch the movie Secretary, as I think it’s a great modern story involving cutting, but I’m pretty sure they’d find it “obscene,” considering it involves — gasp — BDSM.
Anyway, this little site has issues with emo and:
cutting
suicide
poetry
lyrics
MySpace
… but the real obsession is self-injury and suicide. Because, you know, nobody but emo people kill themselves. All those thousands of people annually who kill themselves because they suffer from depression or other mental illnesses? Emo. When will these people get a clue? They have a “tragic examples” section, with the three “emo suicide” stories that have been dragged through the press endlessly over the past year or so, with #1 being Hannah Bond. I feel bad that these people died, but let’s face it: if you’re making a site about an “emo suicide epidemic,” you really should be able to find more than three tragic examples. At best, three deaths are an anomaly, not a statistical norm, especially when you consider the number of people who identify with emo worldwide, as well as the number of people who take their own lives annually.
The “identifying” emo page is a list of YouTube videos with all the “ooh scary! emo!” reports that have run on television around the world in the past year.
They then pick apart lyrics by:
My Chemical Romance
Panic! At The Disco
Hawthorne Heights
I Hate Myself
They managed to find offensive lines in seven whole songs! Once again, well-researched and well-thought-out! These people know no bounds when it comes to reporting the truth!
But here’s the icing on the cake… the “about me” page:
I’m a licensed mental health professional in the United States. As I’ve mentioned in other sections, I’ve worked in this profession for several different agencies and settings. For the first seven years of my career, I saw only one case of self injury. Since then, I’ve seen dozens of cases, with the number increasing every year. Of course, I became curious. I knew that most of the “cutters” that I’ve seen belong to the “emo” subculture.
Honestly? She must have really lucked out on the first seven years, because self injury is a fairly common thing amongst people with Bipolar and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as with some people who have depression. How she managed to not find any of these people — and then just have a massive influx of emo cutters is well beyond me… but then again, I don’t believe this person is a licensed mental health anything, other than a patient:
You may have noticed that I do not mention my name on this site. There are several reasons. One is that it’s “not about me.” I’m not doing this to advance my career. It’s not going to make me wealthy either. Another reason is privacy. There are quite a few people out there that may get upset with my conclusions, and I’d rather not have my family, my colleagues, or myself be harassed. This is about the kids, let’s make sure that they’re safe. I’ll be content with knowing that I was able to help.
BWAAHAHAHHAHAAH.
Oh man. My name is pixie, I run Emo, Punk, and Beyond, and i bet I have helped more kids than this wingnut ever will. The good thing, though, is I now officially have a site to feud with, as this lunacy is the anti-EPB, and I like having an enemies list. I can’t wait for the forums to open again, though I sincerely doubt they ever will.
P.S. Nice Web design, lady.

What a fucking bitch.
I am speachless.
The site speaks the truth. Too many of us have seen this to deny! You emos try to silence anyone who disagrees with you. Say what ever you want. All the kids, parents, teachers, ER workers, and so on that see this all the time, know what is going on. You can’t hide that.
BTW, thanks for the link, and failboat is a perfect meme for your site.
Good Day
I did struggle with whether or not to put the link in, as you clearly know about the value of links. Oh well. Enjoy it, I guess.
Your criticism of my site is extremely succinct and well-thought-out. I can’t believe someone as knowledgeable as yourself took the time to look at my little site!
Here’s the thing: you’re lying. There is no grand epidemic, and if you took the time to actually listen to a lot of these kids [such as the ones on this site] you’d know that. Nobody is trying to silence you: I critiqued your site and added my thoughts. If you think that’s an attempt to “silence” you, there’s yet another thing you need to research a bit better: what silencing someone means.
About me: I’m a 33-year-old writer who started this site with my friend after a similar site I was working on for my job was closed by my boss. Why? Because so many people said it helped them and was important to them. I take that very seriously, and the people on this site are intelligent, funny people who are misunderstood by many people. I’ve been in the scene — call it what you want: emo, punk, goth, hardcore, whatever — since I was a teenager myself and music saved my life and helped make me a better person countless times, as many people in the scene will say. The people in the scene bond and help each other, and nobody wants to see anyone get hurt. If you knew the first thing about it, you’d see that. You’d see the kids helping each other, healing, and growing. Not everyone fits in. Not everyone wants to fit in. That’s why there are niches and subcultures, and just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean you need to try and tear it down. An uneducated opinion is a dangerous thing.
Also, for the record, I know many people who are teachers and they don’t seem to see this epidemic that you’re describing. Further, I know many people in psychology, and study it myself [it’s a hobby] and honestly, your assessment just doesn’t hold up. One, cutting is related to mental illnesses, not subcultures. Two, cutting is spoken about more now than ever before — in ALL of society — and that is why it seems like it is more common. It isn’t. Let’s face it — most people don’t read about cutting and say, “hey, that sounds like fun! I bet I’ll fit in if I slice my own arm open” Unless they have the issues that trigger that sort of behavior, it would be virtually impossible for them to find it within themselves to even do it in the first place.
I realize I’m talking to a brick wall, but if you honestly studied self injury and the related statistics, as well as had some honest insight into the emo/punk culture, you’d see that you’re misguided. Am I saying nobody in the scene cuts or commits suicide? Of course not. But guess what? Country music fans, pop music fans, rap fans, classical fans — a percentage of those people do the same things.
It’s really people’s willful ignorance that gets to me.
wait, “nobody in particular” are you kidding or are you serious?
IF YOU ARE SERIOUS:
what the hell are you doing on an emo website
you have no idea what you are talking about
IF YOU ARE KIDDING:
funny joke. scared me though.
Hahhaa, I think that’s the moron who made that site in the first place, since it says “thanks for the link.” And I do hate that they got an extra link out of my drawing attention to them, but whatever…
Holy shit!
I think we have another Viking on our hands.
not only are they full of fecal matter, but they weren’t even convincing. they could have found MUCH more depressive lyrics if they had any creativity in the bands they attacked. goodness, they didn’t even include “Ohio is for Lovers” the idiotards
My thought EXACTLY!!!
I asked my mom if she was going to join “Parents against emo” and she laughed, anyone with half a brain knows thats a ton of shit.
Not to mention that for every “negative” song they found, they could have found a positive one — why does everyone ignore “Famous Last Words” by My Chemical Romance? I know! Because “I am not afraid to keep on living” doesn’t fit their agenda, and is actually a positive lyric and a positive song.
The people are SO wildly ignorant. I don’t understand how so-called professionals can’t grasp that music does not make people cut themselves or kill themselves, but rather, mental issues do. How do they ignore the thousands of suicides that are pulled off by people of all ages, walks of life, and special interests, and just focus on one, tiny scene?
I mean, if all “emo” people did was kill themselves, it’d really not be much of a scene, would it? And yet… I see sold-out shows full of living people who aren’t bleeding half to death from their constant cutting.
A site like that will never help anyone, anyway. If you DID have a kid who was emo and cutting themselves, or emo and NOT cutting, or NOT emo and cutting, a site like that would put them on the defensive, rather than in a place where they could talk and be open and honest and get help. I think that’s what makes this site more helpful than rubbish like that lady’s site.
I’ve seen this bloody piece of trash before. I mean, COME ON. Helena has nothing to do with suicide. Every self-respecting MCR fan KNOWS that it is about Elena Lee Rush, Gerard and Mikey’s grandmother.
I was going to post a massive bash on their forums before they closed down, making multiple references to Pixies take on the Daily Mail articles (you had a good point). Unfortuanatly, I was caught by my mother, who, like these people, believes that most teens take the music the “wrong way”, and that I have to see it “from their side, not just [my] own.”
I would, if not for one thing, “their” side is pile of lies.
And if music is THAT influential on teens, then in these peoples eyes, not only should I be cutting myself, but I should also be worshipping Satan, and burning things, seeing as I also identify with the goth, and punk subcultures. xD
Whoah, now as I read even further, it’s turning out to be just another “OMG, OUR KIDS ARE REBELLING AGAINST WHAT WE DEEM PROPER, AND BEING INDIVIDUALS!!!!!!!!” site. On the “What can We Do?” page, it talks about banning piercings, all black clothing, wristbands, and emo hairstyles from schools, so that children “cannot advertise their ideas” and that “Making them look like us will decrease the attractiveness of rebellion”. Yeah, we can’t have teens having their own ideas and rebelling against what we deem acceptable, no matter how flawed it is, can we?
Pfft, is rebellion and individual thought didn’t exist, Women would not have rights, Black people would still be enslaved, Hitler would’ve taken over the world, and Democracy simply woulden’t exist.
Parents, face it, Rebellion and intelligent thought, however frightening the very notion may seem, needs to be accepted, or else nothing would ever change.
You know…. I’m starting to think that site may be a joke…. Actually, I hope it’s a joke, because if that person is serious, the help they need is probably not offered by any institution in the world and they’re a danger to themselves and others. ^_^
The “would Elmo sing this!?” makes me laugh every time I hear it. I’ve seen that same video on so many sites that it’s just sad. My favorite part was when they picked apart the “Time to Dance” lyrics, it made me laugh.
That is seriously the most retarded website of the decade, but the worst thing about it was the way they blamed emo for depression.
Now what’s ACTUALLY depressing is the way our parents’ generation treat each other, the way they started off so cool (hippies, you know) and then just went right into the whole yuppie thing when they turned 30. And therapists are depressing because they invent extra problems for people ((sometimes)) and provide the youth with drugs that numb their minds and make them stupid.
How can songs about suicide, self-harm, and death be depressing? I just don’t get it!
ok thats not always true about therapists… but whats funy is if you take the word “therapist” and put a space between the “the” in it…
Bwahahaha
That made my day LostDecember
My cousins and I found a thing at Borders that was called “Therapist in a Box” and with the way it was angled it just looked like “Rapist in a Box.” Thanks for making me smile today, I needed that! *hugs*
She’s opening the forums again. Bwahahahaha.
Thanks a lot!
oh yuuuuuuuuus, the forum is open… this shall be super fun!
Advice: don’t go over there and give the idiot ammunition. Not worth it, and you won’t change her mind.
*sigh* but… fine, i won’t, you are probably right anyway.
i think her treating more people who cut has to do with the fact there is less social stigma then before.
forgive me but… what does social stigma mean?
Pixie, you’re like, really awesome. Seriously, amazing. I can’t believe you’re 33.
The way people are willingly ignorant always kills me too. It’s so painfully pathetic yet you want to scream at them for doing it. Stupid on purpose. It’s insane.
Wow, that was the funniest site I’ve ever seen. I love all the emo-haters…it’s hilarious how they actually believe what they’re saying. I like this site’s focus on the music. Listening to My Chemical Romance does not make you want to kill yourself, but the opposite. Personally, I’d be more likely to kill myself if I had to listen to country music or rap instead of what I do listen to for a week.
Gah, there’s a password on the forums. Oh well. Although…someone posted some death threat already that just helps the anti-emo thing. (Actually, I bet the site creator just posted that to make emo look bad…unless anyone actually knows where the password is…?)
I also think the ‘BTW’ in the comment was funny. Shouldn’t a “licensed mental health professional” be able to type out ‘by the way’? Most doctors/adults wouldn’t use chatspeak or anything.
Stupid haters =)
so..its ok for kids to rap about killing each other with huge crappy guns that malfuncion and themselves with hard drugs. we listen to music with screaming and HOLYFUCKIGNSHITLOOKOUT!!!
what about metal heads. look at old ozzy lyrics. i havent heard an uplifting lyric from ac dc or mettalica yet.
what im trying to say is music is a way to express yourself. and yes society if fucked. what are you gonna do about it. maybe now you will give your congressman shit for giving himself a raise instead of putting abit of money into the school system. yeah we got problems. how bout you fix em., yeah you its starts with you. until the shut the fuck up
I suppose everyone has a rite to an opinion even if their opinion isnt worth shit to anyone with a few braincells to rub together-
i have friends who dont like emo music, style, lyrics etc… and i told them to have a look at the site. every single one of them though it was stupid.
yeah some of the lines in some of the songs mention cutting or self harm or death etc but can you honestly say that every other genre is innocent?? ever tried listening to RAP?! find me a rap artist who has never talked about killing people…yea theyre out there but not all emo music is about slicing open your wrists.
its sites like these that lead to people getting bashed or alienated because of the music they like of how they chose to dress and do their hair..
emo is about free expression-
the music expresses emotions that everyone experiences it can help people who are hurting IT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE CUTTING!
anyone who thinks listening to MCR,P@TD etc.. will lead to self harm is an idiot.
instead of pointing the finger at the genre, blaming it for the problems that occur in society BLAME society.
in a world where i cant walk into my school without getting stereotyped as a wrist slitting night crawler no wonder some emos cut
