[Rare Review] What Gives, The Academy Is…?

Posted by pixie | Filed under Uncategorized

[Prelude to a review: I may have mentioned this before, but back at the site-that-shall-not-be-mentioned, Tom Z. and I often discussed how useless album reviews are. For the most part, they go on and on about meaningless details, pretentious language, and you often can’t even tell if the reviewer likes it or not. Music reviews have almost become a competition to show off how much the reviewer knows about a band/scene/producer. That said, I am going to put this out there, much in line with what Tom Z. and I said made a good review.]

I have never liked The Academy Is…. I tried to, but they just didn’t work for me. The lyrics didn’t click, the melodies didn’t work, and nothing about their music resonated with me. One of my sisters always told me how great they were, and every time I gave them a try, I ended up disappointed because I just didn’t like them. For example, I gave Santi about 20 tries, and it just always ended up being “God, I have to get this off my iPod so it stops coming up on random.” I’d written The Academy Is… off as a band I should probably like, but never would. [There’s a short list of those, the other two I can think of off the top of my head being Against Me! and Angels and Airwaves.]

Fortunately for me, I have self-diagnosed musical OCD. This unique condition compels me to listen to or get just about every new album that comes out [in the genres I like, anyway.] I’ve been known to put little Post-It notes on pages of Alternative Press, marking bands I’ve never heard of, but seem interesting. I spend hours on end combing MySpace, looking for the next band I will like a lot. Naturally, this led me to check out The Academy Is…’s album, Fast Times At Barrington High. The verdict?

Holy. Crap.

What happened to these guys? At the moment, on the eve of September, this album has a firm top 5 best albums of 2008 spot. It’s great! Poppy and comforting on some level, with nicely put together lyrics that are entirely memorable and quotable. Everything I disliked about this band seems to have ceased to exist — it’s as if they were replaced by a totally different band that I have completely fallen in love with. I guess with these guys, the third time is a charm.

The odd thing is, I went back and listened to the first two albums. Nope, they still don’t work for me. But this album? There’s something amazing about it. I think it’s sad it was all but slipped into stores under the cover of night, especially considering the press that Santi got. This album is two thousand times better and deserves recognition, which is why I wrote this review.

If you already like The Academy Is…, I have no idea if you will like this album. But if you have never liked them before? Give it a try. It just might work for you. Stranger things have happened….

i think it’s funny how all 3 of the band you should like, but don’t, all start with “A”

Hahahha. That is awesome! I never even realized that.

Note to bands: if you want to be friends with pixie, don’t name your band something that starts with “A”!

I have always loved TAI, the new album is Most certainly the best yet.
I want to see them live again, for the fourth time ^_^

I, too, had a lot of troble getting into TAI. I bought ‘Almost Here’ ages ago, because I’d heard good things about them, but I just couldn’t get into it. I’ve only recently started liking them because I saw them live with Panic At The Disco and they put on an amazing show…I’ve just bought their new album, haven’t listened to it yet but I’m looking forward to it. :)

I wish, for their sake, it was getting promoted harder. It seems like people who weren’t into them are really loving this album…

I hope the powers that be at their label are realizing they have a pretty decent hit on their hands if they get some videos and advertising out there.

I never thought The Academy Is… would be in my Top 5 come September of any year! There’s some stiff competition coming up that will probably knock them down [I Am Ghost, Bayside, maybe even The Cure] but… they’re solidly Top 10 without a doubt.

PUSH THIS ALBUM!!!

When I saw them last night, 80/85% of people who were there hadn’t seen them before. Someone somewhere must be doing something to get it heard. :)

hahha, remember when I made fun of them on the old site and got holy hell?

People didn’t get that a LOT of the writing on that site was tongue in cheek, and at least for me, the goal was to make people [particularly my litmus test of Tom Z.] laugh. People took shit WAY too seriously for my tastes… music is fun! You want to be an ass, go to Pitchfork [who are my enemies in my own mind] :P

I’ve loved The Academy Is… since last year when my friends got me into them. I only had Santi for the longest time but i just bought Almost Here and Fast Times At Barrington High two days ago. I love them both but I’ve listened to Fast Times a lot more.

I love The Academy Is… and I love this album as well. It is just that amazing. I have to decide whether I like Santi or Fast Times At Barrenton High better!

I love, I love, I love.

I especially love the random remix of Automatic Eyes on the CitizensFOB mixtape lol

Is this the band that rips off STP in their one chorus? They’re OK, except the singer sounds better on that one Gym Class Heroes song than on any of his own songs.

STP sucks :P

You see, now that’s one of the best reviews ever written about STP. You told me everything I needed to know in two words, without a bunch of unnecessary info about the band’s history and the name of the guy who swept the studio floor. Unfortunately you’re way off, Tiny Music is a classic and “Trippin on a Hole” is the coolest song ever.

Scott is one of the biggest douchebags to ever live on planet earth, It’s all a matter of opinion though.

I do really like The Academy Is…, I saw them last night and they were incredible. But I have to disagree about the Fast Times… album . I really didn’t enjoy it, or Santi, as much as Almost Here. Santi had some really great tracks, but nothing on their last two albums compares to their debut. The songs sound much better live than they do on the CD though.
I think what I’m trying to say is that Almost Here is better than the other two, I don’t get how anyone would prefer their most recent release to anything they’ve done previously. But they are a good band, and really good live and maybe it’s just the Panic at the Disco effect where they change their sound and alienate fans.
The album won’t stop me going to see them, or buying a future release but I would have preferred a different album.
I realise this makes little sense. As a thought/opinion came into my head it went down. If I had time to do it over it would have a better structure. Sorry.
